Colors and forms are layered one upon another within a single pictorial field. Through the upper and lower strata of these fields of color, a clock tower, palm fronds and an apple tree can be seen, conveying not only the passage of time but also a palpable atmosphere. Created by Kimura Chūta, who was based in France and settled there permanently, the work depicts a resort town near Nice in southwestern France. Born in Ritsurin Village in Kagawa District (present-day Takamatsu City), Kimura entered the Kagawa Prefectural School of Crafts (now Kagawa Prefectural Takamatsu Technical High School) in 1930 and in 1943 was enrolled in the Teikoku Art School (now Musashino Art University). During the war years, he was conscripted twice. After the end of World War II, he moved to France in 1953. In 1970, he became a member of the Salon d’Automne. In 1984, the French government awarded him the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Chevalier).
