Art Collection : Artists Connected to Kagawa

2026/05/23-07/12
Permanent exhibition room 4,5
This exhibition showcases works by artists with ties to Kagawa Prefecture that have been acquired in recent years from our museum's collection. These include Ken Edo (1927-2017), who studied under Genichiro Inokuma, a fellow native of Kagawa, and actively mentored younger artists; Mohachiro Nishioka (1927-2024), who satirized modern society through his unique interpretations, using historical figures to express the true feelings of dissatisfied contemporary people; and Shigeyoshi Tanimoto (1929-2022), who depicted the local culture and the indigenous emotions of its people. These are just a few examples of the diverse artists who have displayed their individual artistic talents while being deeply connected to the culture and traditions of Kagawa. Along with 10 works being shown for the first time, the exhibition will also feature "Reimei Sanukiji Shikoku Reijo Hachijuhachiban Okuboji," a major work by Japanese painter Ikuo Hirayama (1930-2009) painted during his visit to Kagawa Prefecture.

Born in Marugame City. Graduated from Kagawa Normal School in 1948. After dropping out of Musashino Art School in 1951, he studied under Genichiro Inokuma. In 1969, he received the New Artist Award at the Shinseisaku Association Exhibition. In 1975, he moved to France, and in 1980, he became a member of the historic French art exhibition, the Salon d’Automne. While evoking a sense of unease about the deep sea, the beauty of the blue world stands out.
