The Sankin-kotai of the Takamatsu Domain

2026/05/22-07/12
Permanent exhibition room 1
The "Sankin-kotai" system was a representative system of the Edo period. While we may picture long processions, its primary purpose was not travel between Edo and the domain, but rather for the daimyo to visit Edo, where the shogun resided, and serve him. It was an important act that represented the master-vassal relationship between the shogun and the daimyo. This exhibition will introduce the procession and journey of the Takamatsu domain's Sankin-kōtai, as well as touch upon the activities in Edo and the procedures for Sankin-kotai.

Product Information

Bear’s throwing scabbard (Kuma no Nagesaya) – Edo period.

Bear fur sheath.

One of the processional tools of the Takamatsu Matsudaira family. A sheath attached to the tip of a spear, made of bear fur. It was folded back during use.
It is said that Matsudaira Yorishige, the first lord of the Takamatsu domain, received one of these spears from among the tools owned by the Shogun’s family, and that’s how it came to be used as part of the procession’s equipment. It is one of the representative processional tools of the Takamatsu domain, and was placed not only on the road but also at the stern of ships when crossing the Seto Inland Sea. There are records of it being passed down when the lord of the domain changed, and it is one of the items that has been passed down through generations.
