As the snow melts and patches of earth begin to show, two pheasants stand quietly beneath the trees. The harmonious interplay of birds, trees, and planes of color creates a fresh, clear atmosphere that gently conveys the arrival of a new season. Hikasa Sūkei was born in Takamatsu City. After graduating from Takamatsu Daiichi High School, Hikasa trained under the nihonga painter Gōkura Senjin upon the recommendation of fellow Takamatsu native and nihonga artist Baba Fuji. In 1941, he was selected for the first time for the 28th Inten Exhibition of the Japan Art Institute. He later enjoyed an active career which included his receiving the Minister of Education Award at the 68th Inten Exhibition in 1983.
