Description

This table and set of chairs were used in the Kagawa Prefectural Gymnasium designed by architect Tange Kenzo (1913–2005) and completed in 1964. Bent laminated wood is formed into circular shapes and stacked. When viewed from the side, their profile opens upward like a morning glory or a trumpet. The table and chairs share a form and dimensions. The tabletop is finished with a white plastic panel, while the chair seats are upholstered in black, red, and orange vinyl. Arranged in various configurations, the visual expression of the furniture changes within the space. The table and chairs were designed by Kenmochi Isamu, who had earlier designed the governor’s office furniture for the Kagawa Prefectural Office Former Main Building and East Wing, which was completed in 1958.
