Against a uniformly green background, bold black lines run vertically, horizontally, and diagonally. Varying in direction, length, and thickness, these lines are punctuated by occasional small black dots. The resulting composition evokes both a decorative pattern and a map-like image. This work was created during Inokuma’s thirteenth year in New York. Inokuma Genichirō was born in Takamatsu City. He graduated from Kagawa Prefectural Marugame Middle School (now Kagawa Prefectural Marugame High School) and went on to study Western-style painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts). He traveled to Europe in 1938 and returned to Japan in 1940. In 1955, while en route to Europe once again, he was captivated by the vibrant energy of New York and made the city his base, devoting himself to abstract expression. From 1975 onward, he worked in Tokyo and Hawaii.
