Emperor Go-Mizunoo Imperial Handwriting (Shinkan) — Added Waka Response

This work preserves a poetic exchange between Matsudaira Yorishige, the first head of the Takamatsu Matsudaira family, who assumed the literary name Ryū’unken Gen’ei after his retirement, and Emperor Go-Mizunoo, who had abdicated. Upon receiving Yorishige’s Chinese-style poem expressing his thoughts upon retirement, the elder emperor responded by writing his own waka poem, conveying his personal sentiments in the interlinear spaces. Together, they convey the inner feelings of Yorishige at age fifty-four and the retired emperor at age eighty. 
Emperor Go-Mizunoo was particularly accomplished in waka and classical studies, and Yorishige’s relationship with him was close. Yorishige frequently received guidance from Emperor Go-Mizunoo on poetry. This work was handed down in the Takamatsu Matsudaira family together with the Emperor Go-Mizunoo Shinkan Nyōbō Hōsho, a court-lady’s document that accompanied the piece when it was returned to Yorishige.
